DO NOT make allowances for clothes, braces etc. Use a flexible cloth measuring tape (can’t find a fabric tape measure? no problem -you can use some string and a ruler). Measure across the upper chest – arm pit to arm pit and around. Make sure the tape measure at the back is level with the tape measure at the front. Make sure the tape is flat against the skin without being too tight or too loose. Take a couple of measurements to check.
